2. Fractionation of macromolecular samples

Establishing the distribution curve of a polymer sample involves separating the sample into fractions that are as polymolecular as possible. Fractionation techniques are based either on differences in the solubility of the sample's constituent species, or more simply on differences in the molecular dimensions of these species.

2.1 Fractionation based on solubility differences

When a homogeneous polymer solution is separated into two phases, the thermodynamic equilibrium conditions of these phases show that the higher the degree of polymerization DP i , the greater the quantity of species i precipitated.
