6. Mini-emulsion polymerization

6.1 Principle of mini-emulsion polymerization

As we have already seen, successful emulsion polymerization requires radicals to be captured by the micelles, and monomer molecules to be transported by diffusion from the droplets to the micelles through the aqueous phase. A slight solubility of the monomer in the aqueous medium is therefore a prerequisite for diffusion, which may limit the use of this process if the monomers used are too strongly hydrophobic.

Mini-emulsion polymerization offers a solution based on the following points:

  • Monomer diffusion is no longer a problem if polymerization takes place in monomer droplets, not micelles;
