4. Properties of expanded polystyrene

4.1 Physical characteristics

EPS foams feature a rigid structure with closed microcells:

  • for PSE-M, the size of these cells is usually between 60 and 200 µm (figure 19 );

  • for PSE-E, particle size varies between 150 and 500 µm.

The EPS-M structure includes inter-bead welds, which is not the case for EPS-E.
