2. Laminating theories

Understanding of the plasticization mechanism has improved over time, but many phenomena are still only partially quantified. This is because the polymers that bind the relatively simple plasticizer molecules are complex assemblies comprising, in the case of semi-crystalline polymers, crystalline and amorphous domains that react differently to plasticizers.

2.1 Lubrication theory

Lubrication theory postulates that the plasticizer, by insertion between two polymer chains, reduces interchain bonding forces. This theory reflects what happens at temperatures slightly below the melting temperature, for which the plasticizing effect is highly dependent on the coefficient of friction of the polymer chains, but, at lower temperatures, this theory leads to representing...
