1. Main properties and limits of use

PMMA is the most transparent of all plastics; it is more transparent than ordinary glass, even at high thicknesses, letting 92% of light through in 3 mm sheets.

Its visual qualities of coloring and surface finish (hard, smooth, glossy) are excellent.

Its mechanical properties, especially rigidity and dimensional stability, are good.

Water absorption is low.

UV resistance and resistance to ageing are superior to those of many plastics.

The properties of light conduction along wire or rod are exceptional (short optical fibers).

The density is 1.17 to 1.20, which is much lighter than glass.
