7. Properties of steels used in plastics processing

7.1 Carcass steels

The steels chosen for the carcasses are generally martensitic stainless steels pretreated to a hardness of 30 to 35 HRC.

Stainless steel guarantees long life against corrosion, even in the absence of specific maintenance. The level of hardness allows easy machining and provides good impact resistance. The use of pre-treated steel means that, subject to the steelmaker's know-how, machining can be carried out right up to the finish without deformation.

The following steels offer these properties and are often used:

  • X33CrS16 ;

  • X36CrMo17 ;...
