5. Specific design features. Constraints
Designing a part to be produced using the water-assisted injection molding process requires certain precautions. This process should be considered as complementary to gas-assisted injection molding, and almost exclusively reserved for large-diameter tubular parts. Water-assisted injection should be considered for diameters of 22 mm and above, which can be considered critical for gas-assisted injection.
Today, most of the parts produced by water-assisted injection molding are tubular parts with a large water passage cross-section. Reinforcing large, flat parts with an extra thickness is still reserved for gas-assisted injection molding.
Any part resembling a handle, armrest, etc. is called a tubular part. All the methods described at

While the situation is complicated with gas-assisted injection molding, it's simple with water-assisted injection molding. In fact, the Institut fûr Kunststoffverarbeitung (IKV) in Aachen, Germany, has been working on this process since 1996, and published its findings in full in the April 1999 issue of Kunststoffe. This publication prevents patent applications from being filed in Europe, enabling the process to be promoted rather...
