Exposure assessment aims to quantify the exposure of target (or potential target) populations to the selected substances.

The health risk assessment model is based on the "source/vector/target" concept, so as to obtain the relevant data needed to carry out the study:

  • source of substances with potential impact ;

  • transfer of substances by a "vector" to a point of exposure;

  • exposure to these substances of the populations (or "targets") located at the point of exposure.

The assessment is therefore based on knowledge of the potential risk source, the mode of transfer to humans or other intermediate targets, and the route of exposure of humans or intermediate targets at the point where exposure may occur.
