5. Conclusion

John Moubray's RCM2-based maintenance method is a rigorous, structured approach based on adaptations of the fundamental principles of Nowlan and Heap's RCM. It is designed to be applied in all industrial sectors, and is widely used, with thousands of implementations to date. Its designer, John Moubray, uses definitions and vocabulary close to the day-to-day practices of those involved in maintenance. It is important to point out that some of the definitions used are specific to RCM2, and that there is a risk of ambiguous interpretations for the uninformed reader.

The RCM2 method uses a set of seven questions concerning functions, functional failures, failure modes and their consequences, maintenance tasks and their intervals.
