Dose létale médiane DL 50 ; median lethal dose in EnglishLD 50 Quantitative indicator of the toxicity of a substance. This indicator measures the dose of substance causing the death of 50% of a given animal population under precise experimental conditions (ingestion, inhalation, cutaneous application, etc.). It is expressed in milligrams of the toxic substance/kilogram of animal. The smaller the number, the more toxic the substance. For example, with an LD 50 of 0.15 mg/kg in skin contact for VX, a drop of 12 mg of VX in contact with the skin is potentially fatal for a person weighing 80 kg.
