Sulfation; Sulfation

The technique of adding a sulfate group – SO ₄ 2 ^– to a compound. Sulfation can be chemical (addition of gaseous SO ₃ , sulfamic acid H ₂ NSO ₃ , sulfuric chlorohydrin ClSO ₃ H...) or enzymaticvia a sulfotransferase catalyzing the transfer of a sulfate group most often via a 3'-phosphoadenosine 5'-phosphosulfate (PAPS).
