1.1 A few definitions

The biodegradation of a material is the result of a series of successive or concomitant physical, chemical and biological phenomena leading in all cases to a reorganization of the biomass and a release of CO 2 (and/or CH 4 ), H 2 O, energy (in the form of heat), a possible production of new organic molecules and possible mineral residues.

As all polymers are biodegradable by nature, the term "biodegradable" used in isolation is meaningless. It must always refer to the way in which this biodegradability has been determined, for example by reference to a specification...
