4. Conclusions

Biological treatment of soil and groundwater ("bio-remediation") is now well accepted by clean-up specialists and European governments alike. It is, however, a time-consuming but inexpensive treatment that requires expertise in geology, microbiology and soil science, as well as in process engineering.
