1.1 Phytoremediation principles
The term "phytoremediation" (figure 1 , table 1 ) covers various processes, the main ones being phytostabilization, rhizodegradation, phytodegradation, phytoextraction and phytovolatilization.
Phytostabilization is the use of plant cover to reduce the transfer of pollutants, by reducing their dispersion through erosion and limiting their uptake by living organisms via the soil solution; the latter objective is tantamount to reducing their bioavailability.
