3. Applications and implementation
At present, the industrial applications of black liquor for the production of high value-added functional materials are recent and still marginal, if not untapped. Most black liquor is recycled and recovered on site, but to a limited extent. First concentrated and then partially dried, it is burned to provide energy for the pulp mill that produces it. In addition, during this incineration stage, some of the reagents used in kraft paper production are regenerated. Recent studies have suggested other ways of recovering this by-product, by generating materials of interest for an eco-responsible energy transition. The carboHIPE processes we have described make it possible to obtain carbons with a wide range of applications.
