2. Cardanol reactive sites

Cardanol is very difficult to obtain via conventional chemical synthesis routes, as the aliphatic side chain is in the meta position relative to the phenol group, which generally directs all substitutions to the ortho and/or para positions. Cardanol lends itself to a wide range of functionalizations leading to specific properties of interest for high value-added polymers. Structural modifications can be carried out on the hydroxyl group, on the aromatic ring and on the side chain (figure 3 ).
