While porous ceramics have long been used in water treatment (see Box 1), it is their use as barriers for uranium isotope enrichment by gaseous diffusion (see Box 2) that has led many countries, including France, to develop the appropriate know-how and industrial tools. The spin-offs of these technological efforts have led to a multitude of other applications for porous ceramic media in many fields, including environmental protection (table 1 )
