2.1 Mechanism and modeling of gas permeation

The transfer of a gas through polymers results from a solution-diffusion mechanism, with the gas first dissolving in the polymer phase before being transported by a diffusion process.

The permeation rate of a gas through a polymer is therefore described by Fick's law:
