4. Hydrogen energy applications
Hydrogen's current applications revolve around its chemical characteristics, and they are numerous: chemical and petrochemical industries, metallurgy, fertilizers... but applications based on its energy qualities are still underdeveloped, and these are the ones we're aiming for. We can sum them up by imagining substituting all gaseous or liquid fossil fuels with hydrogen... that's how wide the range of possible applications is!
Once produced, hydrogen can be used in two different ways: either directly as a fuel, or indirectly by recombining it with oxygen (usually from the air) to produce electricity via a fuel cell. Clearly, for reasons of efficiency, direct use is the preferred option, but when this is not possible, particularly in the case of mobility applications, a fuel cell is unavoidable, but at the cost of an energy loss of around 50%, directly linked to...
