2. Catalysis challenges and different types of photoreactive systems

The production of solar fuels from abundant resources such as H 2 O and/or CO 2 requires the development of photocatalytic systems capable of reproducing some of the fundamental processes involved in the natural photosynthesis of plants or microalgae, hence the term artificial photosynthesis to designate this approach (figure 1 ).
