We saw in a previous article [BM 2 582] how the choice of gear ratios can be dictated by considerations such as maximum speed, crossing capacity or vehicle flexibility and, in general, driving pleasure. This first approach is in fact the one that determines the basic choice of gear ratios.

But there are other criteria to consider, not least fuel consumption. From this point of view, judicious matching of engine and gearbox is the key to controlled consumption
