5. Conclusion

This article proposes an initial approach to methods for calculating the vibratory response of an immersed structure excited by a fluctuating pressure field generated by a turbulent boundary layer. It provides an introduction to computational issues, highlighting the main conceptual tools available to engineers:

  • when it comes to characterizing excitation, having a field that fluctuates in time and space requires data derived from flow measurements or calculations. While computational fluid mechanics tools are becoming increasingly widespread in industry, direct characterization of excitation by calculation is still reserved for special cases. Turbulent boundary layer calculations or measurements in simple configurations allow excitation to be characterized by means of space-frequency or wavenumber spectra, derived from empirical models.
