mechanical seals or "radial face seals" :

A term that has come to be applied to sealing devices for rotating shafts, consisting of two rings in contact on their end surfaces perpendicular to the axis of rotation. They feature a wide variety of technological designs, adapted to a wide range of applications and fluids.
