3. Static theory

Let's take the case of a beam of constant cross-section subjected to an external force P in pure tension or compression.

The ratio dP/df = R is the stiffness of the spring and its inverse is the flexibility or suppleness of the spring.

Knowing R enables us to determine the load characteristic P = g(f), represented here as a segment (figure 1 ). We then have :
