3.1 Accommodation (or adaptation)
Accommodation (or adaptation) is the ability of a material to deform (elastically or plastically) in contact in order to better distribute the load to which it is subjected.
At the macroscopic level, this is what happens, for example, in the case of misalignment of a shaft in its bearing, when the shaft "makes room" for itself on the edge of the bearing. If the accommodation properties were not sufficient in such a case, the abnormally high contact pressure could lead to surface damage (cracking, decohesion, etc.) due to edge overpressure (figure 1 ).
