5. Advanced concept for optimizing machining parameters

The need to improve productivity, shorten lead times, cut costs and achieve high quality has led to the concept of "doing it right the first time". This means that machining conditions must be the result of a constructed approach or strategy, and not of generic or empirical data.

To this end, developments are underway, notably in France but also at ISO level, to establish machining data specifications based on the "Tool-Material Couple" (COM) concept. This is a set of parameters describing a given machining operation, for a given material and with a given cutting tool. The main elements of this set are as follows.

  • The limiting cutting parameters are :

    • on the one hand, the minimum and maximum values for cutting speed and feed rate, generating a minimum specific cutting...
