1.1 Expected qualities of a tool

A tool always consists of two parts, which may or may not be distinct: the body and the cutting part(s). These two components must meet different requirements.

To the body, we ask:

  • rigidity (non-deformability), but sometimes flexibility (band saw, for example);

  • good resistance to fatigue ;

  • to withstand cutting forces without damage;

  • be brazeable, if required for tooth attachment;

  • limited density, especially for large tools.
