1. Magnetic properties and magnetic materials: an overview

1.1 What is a magnetic material?

All materials can be said to be magnetic to the extent that a macroscopic magnetization is measured in response to an applied magnetic field. It is the way in which this magnetization develops or appears that distinguishes the magnetic properties of materials. Generally speaking, a magnetic material – or, more accurately, a ferromagnetic material –, possesses magnetic properties as a result of interactions between microscopic magnetic moments.
