3. Properties of simple nanostructures
A nanostructure is a system whose dimensionality is further reduced compared to a thin film, i.e. whose dimensions are limited in at least two directions in space. They can be produced by lithographic processes, or by chemical or physical means (nanoparticles).
The physical phenomena at work in nanostructures are the same as in thin films, but in a different geometry. However, it is not possible to control the lateral size of nanostructures down to the nanometer with current technologies. As a result, effects that only become apparent at these dimensions, such as surface magnetic anisotropy or Curie temperature reduction, are not encountered in practice.
