Beyond definition, the most important elements in understanding the in vivo fate and deleterious effects of nanomedicines are their physico-chemical characteristics: composition, diameter, mean diameter, particle size distribution and aggregation, morphology, zeta potential, crystallinity, rigidity/deformability and molecular organization.
2.1 Composition
The most important property concerns the biodegradability of the material making up the heart of the drug. Lipids, polymers, which can be synthetic or biopolymers, are therefore preferred.
