5. Application of nanocomposite flame-retardant systems in the cable industry
Since 2000, the main volume applications of nanoparticles as constituents of flame-retardant systems have been in the cable industry (ethylene vinyl acetate, polyethylene, silicones). Other industrial sectors, such as electrical and electronic equipment (fire reaction of polyamides), and the transport sector (fire reaction of polyester or epoxy resins) also use flame-retardant compounds. However, little detailed information is available on the use of nanotechnologies and nanoparticles, as communication on nanoparticles is not well reflected in the communication strategies of industrial end-users. However, cable manufacturers have shown a keen interest in the use of organomodified lamellar silicates, particularly with a view to reducing the incorporation rate of metal hydroxides in EVA or low-density PE formulations.
