2. Electrochemical approach to electropolishing

This section describes the electrochemical principles underlying electropolishing. The analysis of the intensity-potential curves obtained is presented, since knowledge of these curves is essential for understanding the mechanisms involved, and for defining the treatment parameters.

2.1 Surface phenomena occurring during electropolishing

Electropolishing is an electrolytic process based on the anodic dissolution of a thin layer of metal. The purpose of this dissolution is to reduce surface roughness and improve surface homogeneity, thus giving the treated part its glossy properties.
