3.1 Regulations and recommendations
According to the ICRP (Publication 35, 1982), "the fundamental objective of radiation monitoring is to obtain an estimate of the mean dose equivalent and the effective dose equivalent in significantly exposed tissues. This information is useful for limiting the individual doses received by workers and demonstrating compliance with the Commission's recommended dose limitation system and regulatory limits."
Council Directive 96/29/Euratom of May 13, 1996 (Article 6) incorporates the two criteria defined by ICRP Publication 60, namely optimization and dose limitation for practices.
