9. Upstream and downstream activities
For maintenance work to be prepared and carried out, a number of things have to be done both upstream and downstream. Things that need to be taken care of "before", sometimes "after", rarely "during".

In preventive maintenance, decisions are always based on the same implicit or explicit reasoning: for each failure identified as possible, we decide whether or not to do "something", depending on the "probability/consequences" of the failure....
