1. FMA-VC waste and TFA waste in the classification of radioactive waste

1.1 Classification of radioactive waste

The physical and chemical nature, level and type of radioactivity are all characteristics that differ from one waste to another. Radioactive waste generally contains a mixture of radionuclides: uranium, caesium, iodine, cobalt, radium, tritium... Depending on their composition, they are more or less radioactive, for longer or shorter periods.

In France, the classification of radioactive waste is based mainly on two parameters: the level of radioactivity and the half-life of the radionuclides present in the waste.

As regards the level of radioactivity in the waste, a distinction is made between very low-level, low-level, medium-level and high-level waste.
