INTRODUCTION
The Windscale No. 1 plutonium pile accident occurred on October 10, 1957. This article describes how the accident unfolded, after outlining the military context that prompted the production of plutonium. It then describes the measures taken to protect the population, the radionuclides released into the atmosphere and the health studies carried out over a long observation period.
