4. Some specific innovation themes

Only a few of these innovation themes have been selected here, because of their prominence in R&D. The focus will be on sodium-RWR, gas-RWR and HWR systems, which are the main thrusts of the French R&D strategy for future systems approved by the French government in March 2005.

4.1 More efficient nuclear fuels

Nuclear fuels are constantly being improved to optimize reactor operation (power capacity, operating flexibility, reliability), the fuel cycle (efficient use of fissile material) and nuclear plant safety (robustness, containment of fission products). A judicious choice of fuel material and design ensures good fuel behavior in the reactor, while keeping thermal gradients and fission product diffusion at reasonable levels.
