3. Implementing a safety and radiation protection approach

3.1 Developments for future reactors

The safety approach used in the design of current reactors, backed up by considerable operating experience, has proved its worth. In order to make further progress, designers and electric utilities are considering changes for future generations of reactors. The main objective, in response to the wishes of the public and the demands of the authorities, is to drastically reduce the external consequences of very serious accidents, made more unlikely by the increased reliability of safety systems.
