6. Normal operating transients

PWR boilers are subject to numerous operating transients. This section describes the most frequent situations. The transients presented here relate to a 900 MW unit, by way of example.

6.1 Power variation by steps and ramps

The load variations to which, by design, the unit may be subjected in operation via the turbine-generator set consist of power steps of up to ±10% of rated power, and, more frequently, programmed power variations of up to ±5% of rated power per minute. During these transients, there must be no automatic shutdown, and no secondary discharge to bypass or atmosphere. Two examples are given in paragraphs 6.1.1
