6. Conclusion

In France, but also in many other countries, the management of radioactive waste, particularly nuclear waste, is governed by an institutional organization that coordinates the many operations involved, from raw waste to its elimination from the biosphere, where possible. This is due to the intrinsic nature of this waste, which can lead to exposure to ionizing radiation in the short term for workers and the public, and in the long term for future generations. Talking about radioactive waste requires the right language, a consensus on definitions, and an understanding of how to calculate radiological impacts and safety analyses. The French nuclear safety authority is responsible for ensuring compliance with regulations at all stages, by monitoring the operation of facilities and publishing guides.
