5. Conclusion

Operational management of radioactive waste is an important activity at every stage in the handling of radioactive material. It begins with the production of primary waste packages from raw waste. The trend is to package this waste without delay. These packages are adapted to the characteristics (nature and radioactivity) of the raw waste, ranging from simple carbon steel drums to very high-quality stainless steel packages that can remain unaltered for millennia. Primary waste packages vary widely in terms of volume, weight and radionuclide content. Generally speaking, their weight and activity are high (tons to TBq). Packages provide flexibility in the management of waste towards disposal, which may require lengthy storage and requires establishing that the isolation and containment of radionuclides can be assured for centuries (FMAVC) and then millennia (MAVL and HAVL).
