2. Different types of existing and planned storage facilities

2.1 Situation in France

In France, three radioactive waste disposal facilities are operational, and two more are planned. Andra is responsible for operating the existing centers and designing the planned facilities. In addition, there are 17 tailings disposal sites operated by Areva, which are ICPEs and subject to controls in view of their potential radiological impact on the environment and the population. As mentioned above, the safety and radiation protection issues raised by these tailings repositories are discussed in greater detail at the end of this article.
