2. Protecting people in normal operation

Technical measures are taken in facilities to ensure that, during normal operation, exposure to ionizing radiation of workers and members of the public is limited to levels as low as reasonably achievable and, in any event, below regulatory limits.

These measures are designed to :

  • attenuate ionizing radiation by interposing radiological protection screens between sources and people, adapted to the intensity and penetrating power of the radiation;

  • confine radioactive materials, sources of ionizing radiation, in containment systems that prevent the dissemination of these materials, treat radioactive effluents and control discharges, and manage waste;

  • control access of persons to areas exposed to ionizing radiation or liable to radioactive contamination;...
