1.1 Combustion

Everyone has experienced combustion, whether controlled or accidental, but defining what combustion is isn't that simple. However, the following definition can be proposed.

Combustion is a spontaneous, self-sustaining, vigorous (i.e. rapid) and highly exothermic redox reaction, which can be accompanied by light emission.

Combustion is therefore a chemical reaction involving two reactants, a fuel that plays the role of reducer and an oxidizer that plays the role of oxidant (the latter term is often used instead of the former). The products of this reaction are called combustion products and are mainly carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and water...
