The quantity of motionQM attached to a material system can only vary over time (in the sense of creation or destruction) if the system is subject to a non-zero force torsor. Thus, noting that the quantity of motion attached to the unit volume of fluid is ρv, the balance equation (6) attached to this vector quantity is written :
