2. Production of biofuels from biomass
According to European Directive 2003/30/EC of May 8, 2003, as incorporated into Directive 2009/28/EC, biofuels are defined as follows:
“liquid or gaseous fuels used for transportation and produced from biomass,” that is, derived from non-fossil plant and animal organic matter.
The same directive also lists 10 products considered to be biofuels: bioethanol, biodiesel (vegetable or animal oil esters), biogas, biomethanol, biodimethyl ether (bio-DME), bio-ETBE, bio-MTBE, synthetic biofuels, biohydrogen, and pure vegetable oils.
