2. Fuel cells for cogeneration

2.1 Fuel cell principle

Discovered in 1839 by Sir William Grove, the fuel cell uses two gases, hydrogen and oxygen, as an electrochemical couple [D 3 340] . The redox reactions in the fuel cell are therefore particularly simple:

at the anode :
$H_{2} \to 2 H^{+} + 2 e^{-}$
