2.1 Prospecting

In exploration, petroleum geologists look for the components needed to form a deposit: source rock, reservoir rock and traps. Exploration begins with a geological study of an area, followed by more detailed structural studies. Various techniques are used, some ancient, others highly sophisticated. Despite recent technological advances, no method guarantees success, and exploration remains uncertain until wells have been drilled and tested.
