3. Focus on crystalline silicon and its associated value chain

Crystalline silicon technology dominates other technologies with a market share of nearly 97%. This technology has made it possible to increase both the performance and durability of modules, while reducing costs.

This reduction in module costs (divided by 250 in 50 years) has enabled electricity generated from photovoltaics to become competitive with all other sources of electricity.

Figure 34 provides a better understanding of the progress made over 50 years in parallel with the increase in production. This trajectory now makes it possible to achieve the lowest LCOE of all electricity sources, enabling photovoltaics to further increase its production level and market share.
