2. How can landfill gas be recycled?
Landfill gas is created during the anaerobic decomposition of organic substances in household solid waste (MSW) and commercial and industrial waste (C&I). Depending on landfill design and management, as well as waste composition, compaction, moisture and many other factors, thousands of landfills are available worldwide for the collection and use of this important renewable energy source for power generation. If landfill gas escapes into the atmosphere, the methane it contains is a powerful greenhouse gas, 24 times greater than carbon dioxide. So preventing its release into the atmosphere and using it as a renewable fuel source is a win-win situation.
